Emigrating to Canada and the reasons why people want to go there and get out of Britain are quite varied but add up to a hefty load on balance. My better half and me used to think that any one in Britain who had the sense and the money to be able to get their kids into a private school would be foolish not to do so. And more and more do, because you should not have to of course. We now think that anyone with the skills, the gumption, ambition and to a certain amount the money to get them into a better country would be foolish not to and more and more are.
I can just about remember people moving out of Britain en-masse in the 1970's, the brain drain of that time. For the uninitiated this was the time when people in other European countries referred to the UK as 'the sick man of Europe'. There were constant strikes, power cuts, fuel shortages, rail strikes, airline pilot walkouts, working to rule, the closed shop, secondary picketing, you could not bury your dead at one point etc. okay higher earners were hammered on tax re: Chancellor Dennis Healy "we will tax the rich till the pips squeak" and so on but the rest of life was generally orderly and people law abiding. There was a discipline in schools and education was set at a high standard and examinations were challenging. Get hold of a GCE 'O' level 1970's maths or English / geography / history / physics paper and see if you can answer a question! Lots of top scientists and other highly skilled workers left Britain for good at this time. I remember a metallurgist that lived near us and who moved to California in the USA. People got out because of industrial unrest or tax and it appeared that the émigrés were from the higher levels of society so to speak. Not only is there a rush to emigrate to Canada and Oz / NZ nowdays, but people from all levels and sides of the work force spectrum want out. Truck drivers to brain surgeons, chamber maids to policemen are set to emigrate to Canada in bigger and bigger numbers.
Why are people leaving Britain and immigrating to Canada and what do people missing when they get there?
Some people want to get away from griping relatives or the London congestion charging but most people hold deeply concerned reasons as to why they want out. Public safety and Law and Order, 'Chav' tolerance, bad language, yob culture, poor discipline in schools, poor education standards, rainy summers and gray winters, over crowding, overcrowded roads, inadequate public transport, too many Asylum seekers, 'Rip -off Britain 'high income tax, ever rising Council tax, unpaid inheritance tax, long working days, low paid jobs, fear of MRSA in hospitals, political correctness, state intrusion into the life of the individual, corrupt politicians. One of the main concerns of many people is the outlook for their kids, their future well being and safety, and their prospects in a country which is viewed by many as dangerous, expensive and unstable. These comments are not to be taken as anything party political as all the main camps have gone along with or allowed society to change in such a way that many people do not feel they belong in their country of birth any more despite Canada has problems and crime just like anywhere else on the planet, but on balance people who have left Britain and emigrated to Canada feel that qualities of life are higher in Canada for themselves and their off-spring.
What do people say they miss about Britain once they have immigrated to Canada. Coronation Street, football, real ale, proper bacon, fish and chips?
Where we live we can eat lobster on the cheap so we do not worry too much about the fish and chips!
